Having spent most of my formative years in Edmonton trying to hide the Northern landscape from my creative, it wasn’t until I had moved away that I began to appreciate the formalist qualities of cut grass, concrete, and open sky particular to Alberta summer. Returning to Edmonton to begin work on There to Here, a series of portraits exploring my evolving relationships with friends and family, I wanted to harness the tonal and graphic elements of the environment I had grown up with and channel them into the images I created—whether the portraits were photographed in Edmonton or elsewhere in the country.
