Edmonton is a famously terrific place to leave forever. While myopic boosters with plastic smiles squeeze blood money paid to delude us, we collectively know it’s ferocious and difficult here, that the general population considers art an act of privilege, intrusion and, in the case of publicly-funded work, a sort of economic rape. First seeded on campus in the Gateway, eventually creeping out to international audiences, The Explanation’s five works spanning 25 years are selected remnants of frantically negotiating levity, beauty and sanity from a boom-bust reality that will literally shatter the skin of its exposed.
